UNR Gateway Parking Garage | Reno, NV
You know that a project is successful when the President of the University shows up accompanied by the original Batmobile. The new UNR Gateway Parking Complex paves the way for UNR to expand to the south. Before its construction, faculty and staff had to park at the north end of the campus. The project connects the Mathewson University Gateway to the main campus, while also improving connectivity to downtown Reno. This new structure is the first step in adding a new business building, a new life-sciences building and a new hotel conference center.
“This is what the Mathewson University Gateway is all about,” said Brian Sandoval, President of the University. “Connection, collaboration, contact between a campus and a community.”
Built using the CMAR construction method, the contractor was constantly seeking new technologies to speed up the construction. The concrete inspection firm recommended using Smart Rock technology so that the contractor knew exactly when the concrete had reached strength to begin stressing of the post-tensioned concrete slab. This technology trimmed many weeks from the construction schedule. The new parking structure also incorporates a new pedestrian bridge that crosses the historic Orr Ditch allowing those with disabilities to access the university campus. The new Gateway Parking Structure is the next step in the evolution of UNR to become an integrated part of the City of Reno.
